Exciting Opportunity to Join Austin Aspires as an Ellis Aspire Tutor

We Are Hiring!


Start Date: Available immediately – will be mutually agreed upon

Schedule: Flexible schedule - 40 hours/week

Compensation: Hourly position; $18.00-$21.00 per hour commensurate with education and experience.

Requirements of Potential Candidate:

- Individual must understand, or share, diverse cultural values such as trust, familism, and personalism.

- Understanding of immigration stressors and awareness of psychosocial stressors that immigrant/diverse background students and families may experience.

- Ability to practice shared decision-making with students, families, and peers.

- MUST be a self-starter; able to recognize and proactively address needs without waiting to be asked or told.

- Demonstrate belief that all students can be successful and be willing to work to remove barriers for children and families.

- Comfortable redirecting student behavior as needed and practicing consistency with student expectations.

- Applicant must pass a criminal background check with no pending criminal allegations.


The Ellis Aspire Tutor will:

- Be housed in Austin Public Schools (Ellis Middle School).

- Support 7th and 8th-grade students at Ellis Middle School in academic advising and tutoring.

- Advocate on behalf of students and model for students how to self-advocate.

- Gather and report on identified data points, seeking ways to improve the role in the interest of students and families.

- Request support from the Director of Student Programs and colleagues to best serve Austin Aspires.

-Primarily assisting with math - other subjects as needed.


Duties:

- Collaborate with Austin Aspires navigators and Ellis Middle School team to support academic improvement for 7th-8th-grade students.

- Meet daily with identified students to review academic progress, aid with missing assignments, and prep for tests.

-Participate in department meetings

- Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Preferred fluency in reading, writing, and speaking a language in addition to English.

- Demonstrate understanding of diverse cultures.

- Experience in education, social sciences, working with youth and families, community development, or related experiences is a plus, but not required.

- Good listening skills, dependability, and honoring work commitments.

- Ability to develop relationships with students, parents, community members, and support organizations.

- Passion for education and strong interest in one or more academic areas (math, English, science, etc).

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

- Ability to maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with various stakeholders.

- Ability to handle and keep confidential information.

- Solid organizational and time management skills.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, and electronic calendar; proficiency in basic computer use.

- Willingness to participate in learning and growth opportunities within and outside of the organization.

- Possess a valid driver's license.
